Audi has unveiled the 2008 R8 —
its first ever mid-engine sports cars. Sales will begin in the first half of
2007 for the United States and Europe. The car has a 420 horsepower high-revving
V8 engine and all-wheel-drive. It uses the mid-engine Lamborghini Gallardo
platform, and will somewhere between $80,000 and $110,000 — positioning it
squarely against the BMW M6, Porsche 911, and Aston Martin Vantage. It features
a choice of LED or Xenon headlamps surrounded by LED running lights and
indicators. LEDs are also used in the engine bay to make the impressive V8
visible even at night. Both a standard manual and an automated manual
transmission will be offered. Claimed 0 to 62 mph time is 4.6 seconds, though
this number is likely conservative.

The Audi R8 is a mid-engined
sports car released by the German automaker Audi in 2006. Audi announced in 2005
that the name of the successful Audi R8 race car would be used for a new road
car in 2007, the Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car, which
appeared at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and 2003 International Motor Show. The R8
was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006. There is
some confusion with the name which the car shares with the Le Mans winning R8
LMP. Originally, many thought the car would be called the R9 (as there is a gap
in numbering left when Audi announced the R8's successor, the diesel-powered
R10).

were getting out last shots of the Audi R8, two technicians popped open the hood
and started fiddling around with jumper cables. Excited to hear the first purr
of the engine we asked one of them if they were going to start the car. Well,
not only did they start it- they took a mini test drive, and we caught it all on
