golf mk4 dashboard modification

Fitting Bora Dash Vents to a Golf mk4 is a popular modification, due to the contemporary design of the Bora vent that has a series of shutters to close the vent completely and illumination of the controls. The parts required to replace the Golf vents with Bora parts are as follows:

1J2819704E2AQ (x1)
1J2819703E2AQ (x1)
1J0819728E2AQ (x1)
1J2819186A         (x1)
1J2819197A         (x1)

To provide illumination of the vent controls, it may be possible to splice the wires supplied with each of the three vent assemblies into some adjacent illumination wires behind the dash, however a neater solution is to use a custom made loom that can also provide a dimmed illumination feed to additional components, such as a W8 Passat interior light.

The Passat interior light is also a popular modification, as this provides additional red illumination over the centre console area of the dash when the car's lights are switched on.

The custom made wiring loom for providing illumination to the Bora Vents is now available from www.kool-vw.co.uk.  You can also get the complete kits from eBAY, check out the stuff on the right.

Procedure using custom wiring loom (VENT_GF4)

1. Remove glovebox assembly and LH dash end cover to gain access to LH vent.

2. Remove LH A-Pillar trim

3. If fitting the W8 interior light, feed the long single grey/blue cable up past the end of the upper dash and pull it up from the bottom of the A-pillar. Secure the cable in the existing cable clips along the A pillar and then tuck the wire behind the top of the headlining at the top of the windscreen, and then feed it across to the interior light aperture.

4. Remove the LH Golf vent and drill through the sunken area of the dash moulding as shown to allow the Bora vent plug to pass through the dash. Clip the new vent into position and plug the illumination plug into the first socket along the new Bora vent/W8 light loom

5. Remove the centre Golf vents by unclipping the moving vents to gain access to the 2 retaining screws. Unplug all of the fascia switches from the vent panel.

6. Screw the new Bora vent frame into position using the same screws that previously held the Golf vent in place.

7. Fit the fascia switches into the new vent panel, feed the illumination wire behind the dash, and clip the Bora vent into position.

8. Plug the centre vent plug into the second socket along the new Bora vent/W8 light loom, and feed the rest of the loom either below the centre console or over the top of the radio/CD player and behind the cupholder, across to the right hand side of the dash.

9. Remove the two lower dash panels on the RHS of the car, and unclip the RH dash end panel (around the fuse box)

10. To remove the RH vent, first you will need to remove the headlamp switch to gain access to the retaining screw. To remove the switch, push the switch in and then simultaneously turn it clockwise to the 12'o'clock position where it should hold. In this position the two retaining clips will be retracted and the switch can be pushed forwards out of the dash from behind.

11. Remove the headlamp aim adjuster switch and the illumination dimmer switch from the vent panel, and unscrew the vent retaining screw.

12. Remove the Golf RH vent and replace with the new Bora vent frame, before clipping in the new RH vent.

13. Take the illumination loom from the centre console and plug the RH vent plug into the third connector on the loom.

14. Supplied with the new illumination loom is a 4th connector housing, and a mating 2 pin connector housing with no pins in it. This will allow you to connect into the existing grey/blue and brown wires from the illumination dimmer switch.

- Remove the blue/grey wire and the brown wire from the 6 way connector housing that plugs onto the dimmer switch (use a pair of paper clips to release the pins), and then push these into the new 2 way connector housing in the corresponding positions to match the colours of the wires on the mating connector. Reconnect the 2 pin connector to the plug on the illumination loom.

- Plug the two loose wires on the loom into the 6 way dimmer switch plug in the same positions vacated by the grey/blue and brown wires that you have just removed. Again, ensure that the same coloured wire is inserted into the same position.

15. Reassemble everything and test the dash illumination. NB, ensure the W8 connector wire is properly insulated  before testing if this wire has not been connected to a W8 light yet.

16. If you are fitting the W8 interior light at the same time, the long grey/blue wire that you fed into the headlining can be fitted into the W8 light connector, in the position taken by the short wire with bared end shown at the bottom of the picture below.

The neatest way to connect your new interior light is by making an adaptor that plugs directly onto the end of the car's wiring loom, to the plug that would usually plug into the standard Golf interior light. For further information about constructing a wiring adaptor for the W8 light, please see Mikedav's site here
