This article was provided courtesy of A common fault on the Golf Mk4 is the weakness of the plastic clips that attach the window glass to the electric winder mechanism. If you hear a cracking noise whilst operating your electric front windows, then it is highly likely that at least one of the window clips has cracked and is the sound of impending doom! At worst, the window glass will fall straight into the door as you attempt to raise the glass. This can be very inconvenient and downright irritating, particularly if you need to secure your car or the weather is not good. Luckily when my first window dropped I had already taken the precaution of buying some of the new all-metal repair kits from VW and so I was ready for it. Or at least I would have been ready, had I taken the kit with me on the day that the regulator failed!
As long as you don't continue to try to operate the electric window motor after the window has dropped, you can repair the mechanism fairly cheaply using only the VW repair kit for around £25-30 per side. If you continue to operate the motor then it is possible to damage the cable system on the regulator in which case you will have to replace the complete regulator which is integral with the inner door panel and costs around £70. 3 Door Car Repair Kits:1JE 898 099 n/s 1JE 898 100 o/s

These repair kits also include the central cable of the regulator mechanism, should replacement be necessary. Replacing only the clips, using the repair kit, can be done in around 1-2 hours (or less with additional hands), and the best guide for this procedure can be found courtesy of the VW Vortex forum here, but I found that not all steps are actually necessary so here are my tips:
TIP - If your car also suffers from the common problem of a door lock that springs up again as soon as you lock the car, now is a good time to investigate/replace your lock mechanism inside the door.
